This month I had the chance to join Steve Benjamin, marine biologist and founder of Animal Ocean, for a private ocean safari in False Bay. As an ocean lover, and avid fisherman, the opportunity to head into False Bay with such an experienced Marine Biologist was truly exciting. Have I mentioned I love my job? We launched early from Millers Point, the sun just starting to rise over the mountains. It's a magical time to be on the water. Calm, quiet, and full of possibility.
From the moment you set out, Steve’s knowledge is evident. He reads the ocean like a book. Spotting whale “footprints”, Whales themselves, Penguins, Seals, and an array of Seabirds long before anyone else does. As someone who struggled in school and with traditional learning methods, I really appreciated that when Steve explains what’s happening, it’s in a way that makes you feel part of the story rather than sitting in a lecture. My guests for this particular outing, were totally enthralled.
One moment that stood out was watching Steve slip into the water and gently bring a small pyjama shark up to the surface with his hands. He spoke about its role in the ecosystem and let everyone get a closer look before releasing it safely back. It was the kind of encounter you don’t forget. Equal parts thrilling and respectful.
As we pushed further south, the highlight was rounding Cape Point and viewing that iconic tip of Africa from the ocean. From the sea, the cliffs feel even more dramatic, the lighthouse perched high above. It’s a perspective few ever see, and it gives you a whole new appreciation for the scale and wild beauty of this coastline. On our way back to Millers, because of the perfect conditions we were able to explore a small cave nestled along the coast. Never before have I felt as if I were under Cape Point, and this was another perspective my guests and myself absolutely loved. It also proved a wonderful spot for some hot chocolate!
False Bay is one of the most diverse marine environments in the world, and exploring it with someone who has dedicated his life to studying and protecting it makes the experience even more special. It’s not just about ticking off wildlife sightings, it’s about understanding the ecosystem and the role each creature plays.
A day with Steve is relaxed, fun, and eye-opening. Guests always leave with a new appreciation for the ocean on our doorstep, and usually a few incredible memories too.

On our trip, Josh and Saffa Tours put together an amazing itinerary, based on what we were into, and they provided us with an absolutely incredible trip. My wife and I love to travel, and have worked with many groups such as Saffa Tours; this trip was, by far, our favorite tour, and Saffa was the best guide group we’ve ever used.

We cannot thank Saffa Tours enough for making our precious time in the Cape the best it could be. I cannot recommend Josh and his company Saffa Tours enough, as they made our time in South Africa in the Cape absolutely amazing and we were looking forward to the holiday because of the great preparation.

Absolutely brilliant trip to Cape Town and around the Western Cape with Josh and the Saffa team. Perfectly and thoughtfully organised, full of insight and fun. Could not recommend more!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. Well worth the cost visiting in the Cape area where there are so many things to do. Lightyears ahead of what a larger tour group would be able to put together. From small details to adjusting the daily itinerary on the fly.

Never have I encountered such organization, such fire for exploration - to show and to teach, and such willingness to adapt the bespoke tours and plans offered at any moment. We felt understood, we felt appreciated, and we felt that our best interests were always put first.

Amazing tour company. Josh helped plan our itinerary around the activities we wanted to do. Due to weather conditions a couple of the activities were cancelled but there were alternatives ready straight away. Rich was our guide and he was a joy to be around. Highly recommend!
