Luckily in my line of work, I find myself in places that quietly remind me of why I love what I do. This month, it was the Swartland - a region known for its raw beauty, rugged charm, and, more recently, world-class wines. We had the privilege of visiting the Mullineux vineyards for a private behind-the-scenes look, and it was nothing short of unforgettable.
Mullineux was born in 2007 when Chris and Andrea Mullineux. After vintages in France, California, and Stellenbosch they settled in Riebeek Kasteel in the Swartland region, determined to explore the area’s ancient granite and schist terroirs.
The Swartland has a way of disarming you. It’s wild and open, with rolling hills and dusty roads that feel more untouched than our typical wine regions. When we arrived at the estate, there was no big signage, or parking lots - just the warm welcome of the team and the unmistakable sense that this is a place where serious wine is made by people who care deeply about the land.
We were lucky enough to walk through the vineyards with the viticulturist, who spoke about the soils, the drought, the cover crops, and the importance of working with nature rather than against it. There’s a humility in the way the team approaches their farming, a quiet confidence built on years of listening to the land.
We gained an understanding of the area, and learnt that because of the heat and wind in this area, disease does not flourish, and therefore the crops do not need to be sprayed. This allows for legitimately organic crops.
Inside the cellar, the winemaking is as honest as the farming. Open-top fermenters, and minimal intervention - it’s clear that every bottle is a reflection of place, vintage, and the people behind it. The wines we tasted were layered and pure. Chenin Blancs, Syrah’s, Chardonnays. Each one told a story.
But what struck me most wasn’t just the quality of the wines. It was the intent behind them. There’s no pretence here. No rush. Just a deep respect for the Swartland and a quiet determination to express it at its best.
Guiding guests through experiences like this is why I love what I do. It’s not just about wine, it’s about people, land, stories, and connection. Mullineux reminded me of that in the best possible way.
