Day 2

Cape Town to Cederberg

The Mother City to the The Mountain Range

  • Helicopter Flight to the Cederberg

A helicopter flight from Cape Town to the Cederberg offers a breathtaking journey over diverse landscapes. You’ll depart from the city, soaring over the rugged coastline, the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, and the scenic Cape Winelands. As you head inland, the terrain shifts to dramatic mountain ranges, with striking views of jagged peaks and valleys of the Cederberg wilderness. The flight provides a unique perspective on the region’s natural beauty, blending the coastal charm of Cape Town with the remote, rugged allure of the Cederberg.

  • Short Hike to go Swimming in the Rock Pools

Hiking to the rock pools in the Cederberg is an adventurous and scenic experience. The trail takes you through rugged terrain, characterized by striking sandstone formations, fynbos vegetation, and panoramic mountain views. As you wind through this dramatic landscape, the path leads to secluded, crystal-clear rock pools nestled among the rocks. These natural pools offer a refreshing and peaceful escape, perfect for swimming after the hike. The combination of the wild beauty of the Cederberg and the tranquility of the pools makes for a rewarding and immersive outdoor adventure.

  • Lunch: SAFFA Gourmet Picnic

Served at one of our secluded locations, your SAFFA private guide will provide a gourmet picnic with a wholesome sandwich or wrap, an array of delectable eats, and a range of drinks of interest. Enjoy this amongst the wild beauty of the Cederberg and the tranquility of the pools. An exclusive SAFFA experience at one of our favourite secret locations.

  • Hike Back and Freshen-Up

After a refreshing swim in the rock pools, the hike back offers a serene cooldown as you retrace your steps through the rugged Cederberg landscape. The return journey feels more relaxed, with the late afternoon sun casting a golden glow over the rocky terrain and fynbos. Once back at your base, freshening up is a welcome ritual.

  • Star-Gazing

The Cederberg is star-gazing heaven. The night skies are beautiful with little or no cloud cover year round, and very little light pollution. And yet we are a mere 2½ hours from Cape Town. Throughout the year the constellations are constantly moving. But the one that stays year round in the Southern Hemisphere, and the one that most people love to see, is the Southern Cross! Come and learn how to find True South with the Southern Cross and witness a couple thousand stars and even some planets with the naked eye.

Day 3

The Cederberg

The Mountain Range

  • Bird Island & Walkthrough Museum

Bird Island lies about 100m off the shore of Lambert’s Bay on the Cape’s West Coast. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to see the blue-eyed Cape gannet up close. As the only accessible spot in the world to see Cape gannets breed, Bird Island is a bird-watcher’s paradise. The island’s hide is perfectly situated to observe their activities first-hand and learn more about their breeding habits. Other birds include the Cape cormorant and the kelp gull. The Walkthrough Museum provides you with the opportunity to explore a variety of sea mammals and sea bird skeletons such as the Cuvier’s beaked whale, Cape fur seal, Cape gannet, Dusky Dolphin, etc.

  • Lunch at Muisbosskerm Open Air Restaurant

Muisbosskerm is a rustic open-air restaurant located along the West Coast of South Africa, near Lamberts Bay. Known for its relaxed, authentic atmosphere, it offers diners the chance to enjoy meals outdoors, often with the sound of the ocean in the background. The experience centers around the traditional style of cooking over open fires, with a strong connection to the local coastal environment. The setting, with its panoramic sea views and laid-back charm, creates a memorable dining experience that celebrates the simplicity and beauty of the region.

  • Rooibos Tea Farm Tour

Rooibos tea is a major industry in the Cederberg. The Cederberg also happens to be the only place in the world where rooibos tea can be successfully grown. So this healthy caffeine & tannin-free tea is exported throughout the world to Europe, Japan and the USA for example. Come on this fascinating Rooibos tea farm excursion to one of the local Rooibos farms. Here you can see how they grow and then process the tea, and afterwards you enjoy a tea-tasting.

Day 4

The Cederberg

The Mountain Range

  • Khoisan Rock Art & Paintings

South Africa probably has the richest legacy of Rock Art in the world. The Cape, particularly the mountainous regions from the Karoo to the Cederberg, may have more rock painting per square kilometer than anywhere else in Southern Africa. Transport yourself to the era and life of the Khoisan people, learn their craft, and experience their way of life. Marvel at the ancient rock paintings of the San (Bushmen) people on the Sevilla Rock Art Trail. The walking trail consists of 9 different rock art sites and will take about 2½ to 3 hours to complete, depending on how long you stay at each site. It is a 5km round trip.

  • Lunch at Khoisan Kitchen

This is a restaurant, coffee shop and craft shop on the farm near Sevilla, where you can grab something to eat and/or drink  before or after your Khoisan Rock Art & Paintings excursion on the Sevilla Rock Art walking trail.

  • Cederberg Fynbos & Wild Flower Displays

The Cederberg is the northern most point of the Cape’s fynbos biome. Here we see a wonderful mix of montane fynbos with some succulent Karoo species thrown in for good measure. There are over 1000 fynbos plant species, some of which are only found in the Cederberg such as the Clanwilliam daisy. After good winter rains comes the displays of wild spring flowers. This is particularly good in the hinterland of the Cederberg, in the area known as “Agter Pakhuis” and the Bieudouw Valley. Here you may be lucky to see carpet of spring flowers with nemesias, babiana and ixias  in great profusion.

An absolutely incredible trip

On our trip, Josh and Saffa Tours put together an amazing itinerary, based on what we were into, and they provided us with an absolutely incredible trip. My wife and I love to travel, and have worked with many groups such as Saffa Tours; this trip was, by far, our favorite tour, and Saffa was the best guide group we’ve ever used.

Epic private tour guide

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. Well worth the cost visiting in the Cape area where there are so many things to do. Lightyears ahead of what a larger tour group would be able to put together. From small details to adjusting the daily itinerary on the fly.

Amazing tour company. Josh helped plan our itinerary around the activities we wanted to do. Due to weather conditions a couple of the activities were cancelled but there were alternatives ready straight away. Rich was our guide and he was a joy to be around. Highly recommend!
