I love many things about my job - guiding gives me the chance to see Cape Town from a completely different perspective. This month due to particularly active guests, I swapped four wheels for two on more than one occasion. I’m not sure if you’ve ever E-biked, but let me tell you, going back to the “analog” bicycle won’t be easy. I like to call it, minimum effort for maximum reward.
The Western Cape is blessed with landscapes that are best experienced at a slower pace. Taking the time to smell the fynbos, feel the sun on your face and stopping around every corner to marvel at the surroundings. E-biking allows for exactly this. It's active without being overly demanding. It allows everyone in the family to partake, without feeling like they’re in the peloton of the Tour De France.
One of my favourite routes is through the Constantia Winelands, where gradual hills guide you past some of South Africa’s most celebrated and historic estates. Pedaling between vines that hold literally centuries of winemaking, guests often remark on how the e-bike makes it possible to enjoy the ride without dreading the climbs. It’s the perfect balance: you arrive at the tasting room ready, not exhausted.
Further afield, Franschhoek and the Banhoek Valley deliver a different kind of magic. Picture winding trails framed by rugged mountains, the occasional vineyard stop, and views that stretch on for days. Here, e-biking becomes more than just a way to get from A to B – it’s an adventure in itself, blending nature, history, and the occasional glass of Chenin. A leisurely ride can quickly become a highlight of someone’s Cape journey.
Of course, not all e-biking is about wine and views. For the adventurous, the dunes along the coast offer something entirely different – fast, sandy tracks that may require a little more skill and gumption than gently pedaling from one wine farm to the next.
There’s a freedom to e-biking here that allows guests to feel part of the landscape rather than just observing it. Whether it’s the quiet hills and streets through Constantia, the mountain-framed valleys of Franschhoek, or the wild dunes along the coast, e-biking in the Western Cape offers a unique way to discover every corner.
